Jail Mail & Who's Yo Shugah Daddy?

$
0
0

Does mail go undelivered at the Lauderdale County Detention Center? A detention center employee has informed us it usually does if there is no return address on the envelope. Cards or letters without a return address are deemed suspicious and may be tossed into file 13.

A friend has reported that mail sent to Edward Ray “Chip” Dillard has been subject to extra scrutiny—apparently due to the seriousness of his alleged crimes. So if you don’t want your name connected to anyone in jail, don’t send any mail.

*****

*****

Speaking of Chip Dillard, who’s paying his attorney Robert Tutin? Tutin regularly represents high dollar clients, while Dillard is reportedly broke.

We also have to ask just how Tutin was selected to replace Dillard’s original counsel Dan Totten of Athens? Could it be that Tutin has connections to the attorney general’s office…connections that would make a deal that more likely?

If Dillard should make a sweetheart deal with the state prosecutors, he still may face local charges of smuggling drugs into the detention center, something he was reportedly blackmailed for by at least one enterprising young client. Deal or no deal, the trial date for Dillard and co-defendants Tim Staggs and Brett Mitchell is in December.

Change the Tourism Board? Yes, We Can!

$

The following op-ed piece if from a reader with vast experience in tourism. We encourage every one in Florence and Lauderdale County to read it. As for those who reside elsewhere, you'll still find the content eye-opening. This is a situation we can rectify. We can ask our new council members to judge for themselves and, when the time is appropriate, take action.

Presenting a huge chunk of truth:

Why is it that there seems to always be SO much controversy with the Florence Lauderdale Tourism Board? How many stories have we read over the past 20+ years about some controversy within that board?

It seems that we never hear about much controversy at other tourism agencies both larger or smaller than Florence-Lauderdale. Could it possibly be that the current and many former tourism board members are hand picked by
Florence City Council members with an obvious agenda? The agenda has been more "control of power" motivated than "growing tourism" motivated.

Very, very few of all tourism board members, both past and present, have had ANY tourism or tourism related experience. Why would grown men want to act as puppets for anyone?? Well, grown men is a stretch when you look at some of the members, both past and present. How many times has David Abramson’s name been mentioned in a a questionable situation. Why is he even on the board.? I think he was in the road construction business before he retired.

Often, board members of an organization are viewed as experts in the field. Would you really want a construction worker on the board of directors for an opera? In most board settings, the members are made up of experts in the field. Doctors and hospital administrators are members of hospital boards. Homebuilders and suppliers are on the board for the Homebuilders Association.

Why do we always seem to get duds for our tourism board? Could it possibly be that Dick Jordan seems to always be at the helm trying to control the board to do what HE wants? It's going to be interesting to see how the tide turns with the NEW Mayor of Florence, who knows ALL about tourism and has no agenda, hidden or apparent.

Now let's dig into the new tennis courts. Why in the world would we build a bunch of tennis courts at Veterans park instead of something that would bring in tourists ALL YEAR LONG and have so much more appeal to everyone and not just the tennis people?

If the rich, tennis loving citizens of Florence want a tennis complex, let them use their own money to build it. Give them some land right off the beaten path and say “here you go…this is our part and now you build the courts.” If they have some skin in the game, they might look at it differently. Veterans park needs to be the home of a true tourist attraction like an INDOOR WATER PARK that can be utilized year round for EVERYONE, not just the rich tennis people. Look at the popularity of the pool, the central focus of the Marriott Shoals. Imagine the weekend business the Marriott and ALL the other hotels around would get with an indoor resort style pool, and other indoor activities.

The number one thing visitors ask when considering visiting a city is “what is there to do there?’ Lets build something that people would be interested in visiting.

Leadership is Limited

Yes, all leadership is limited. Many remember when Florence mayor Eddie Frost passed away; at that time Dick Jordan became acting mayor. Mr. Jordan didn't want the position since he made more money in his insurance business. Think about that: The most qualified for any elected job may not choose to run since he or she will lose money. Others have family commitments which make holding office impossible. Many factors limit the pool of those who will lead the Shoals, the state, and the country.

That brings us to an article about a man who is, or at least was, planning to run for the Lauderdale County Commission in two years. The Lauderdale body has only four members; would you want this person as one-fourth of the commission?

While we doubt Mr. Cheek would have won a place on the commission, what if he had? How many who seek office are ticking time bombs? Worse yet, how many who now hold elected office are ticking time bombs? As we have often said, elections are a crap shoot. Let's do our homework and choose as wisely as we can.

Keller Hospital, The Deer & Trunk or Treat

Keller Hospital
http://media.al.com/news_huntsville_impact/photo/helen-keller-hospital-93e07c4d30b31b01.jpg
As most of you know, there are plans to build a new hospital in this area. My thoughts is do we not have enough hospitals already. Then a friend of mine related this story to me. I have known this person for a long time and have no reason not to believe them. To my knowledge this person has always paid their bills on or before time. This is what they related to me:

I went to Keller Hospital to have some minor tests. I have Obama Care Insurance. There was $470 left after the insurance paid for me to cover. I wrote Keller a check for $25.00 at the first of the month and sent it to them. They cashed it. The following month on the first, I wrote and sent another $25 check to them.  About 2 days later while balancing my checkbook, I saw that the 2nd check had cleared.
Later that same day I got a call from a Collection Agency. I was told by the caller that I had been turned over to collections for my outstanding balance to Keller Hospital. I was floored. I asked how I could be turned over when I had made 2 payments, one that had cleared that day.  Their reply “they turn it over if it is not paid in full.”

With the following in mind, how is Keller going to compete with the new hospital if this is how they are treating their patients. It seems a little extreme to me. This makes me think that if I am ever sick enough to go to the hospital, I’ll go somewhere else instead of Keller.

P.S. Before I sent this article to be published, my friend showed me the paperwork that confirmed the above story. This is really sad.

The Deer
Deer in Sheffield bar

It appears that a deer recently broke into one of the old bar locations on Montgomery Avenue in Sheffield. The building is currently being renovated for a new business to open. I guess the deer wanted to see if any alcohol was left in the building. Sheffield Police were able to get the deer out without harming it. Geez, can’t have a drink in the peace and quiet.

Julian Assange/Naming the Blackmailer?

$

We had the following comment from a faithful reader and friend on our Facebook comment on Julian Assange:

If the charges are proven false why is he hiding in the Bolivian Embassy ? Interesting conspiracy article but it just don't add up on the face of the charges.

To which we replied:

The charges he's trying to avoid come from the alleged rape of an adult woman in Sweden. He says he's innocent, but if he returns to Sweden and is cleared, he will then be extradited to the U.S. where he is definitely guilty of hacking.

In short, our presidential election, no matter whom you support, is being highly manipulated, especially by the DNC. Do you then vote for the Republican candidate? We honestly don’t know how that would best work. Stay at home? No. Vote for an independent? You could, and we certainly may when the time comes; however, there is no way an independent can win our state. Voting for the independent candidate might do good in some states, but here? We sincerely doubt it.

Horrible language and a horrible joke, but remember NO CHOCOLATE for your dogs and cats this Halloween:

A reader has asked to follow through on the blog about the jailhouse blackmailer. Rest assured, as things stand now, we do plan to. We may blog on a slow news day since he’s hardly worth more press

*****

From another faithful reader: Shoalanda, if you forgive someone, even the one who stole that most precious to you, you don’t have to love them, just forgive them and not hate them.

Our answer: Your statement is very similar to a conclusion we came up with almost 20 years ago. Yet while we can forgive what someone does to us, do we have the power to forgive that which is done to those nearest and dearest to us? Or to those nearest and dearest our friends?

Our conclusion? If there is someone out there, maybe in jail, who has hurt the loved one of a friend of ours, and our friend wants us to help make this miscreant’s deeds known, you can bet we will, assuming they are public record and he’s currently in the system. What should he do? We suggest behaving in future or risk his evil deeds following him and his loved ones for the rest of his life, within the above parameters.

What’s funny about the above situation? We understand the feckless ne’er-do-well once said his victim’s friends had no power to hurt him. My, my. Things change, and we guess his opinion of his victim’s friends and family has now changed as well.

It’s “all about we?” Really? At least place “we” in quotes. We will assume that Listerhill wants its customers to have jobs, and we can assure you they won’t have the best ones if they speak that way.

And your advertising man? Even if he should be a good friend of ours, and we have no idea who he is, that is a horrible slogan. So here’s the term for today:

Idiot Savant: a person who is considered to be mentally handicapped but displays brilliance in a specific area, especially one involving memory.

We know some who qualify for this. They have a great aptitude for their jobs, but they don’t want to improve their lives in other says. Well, we have news: It doesn’t work that way. Strive to do better. You can be better, so why don’t you want to?

A friend of ours sent us word about a man who once committed several serious crimes. We have no problem placing that in the man’s past. Yet our message to him, should he be reading and we doubt that he is, is that he can still be a better father. Don’t’ be out gallivanting; isn’t that was caused many of your marriage/family problems to start with?

Crime Dynasties/Fike Verdict/UNA Rape

$

Crime dynasties? We’ve had requests to add two families to our list of crime dynasties, the Dawsons and a second family headed by a woman; however, we’re researching the second offering. As for the Dawsons, some of them spoke openly of their past criminal endeavors; ergo, we have no problem listing them. We do wish to ensure we have the relationships correct in the second family that has been active in both Franklin and Lauderdale Counties during the past ten years.

*****

*****

The Robin Fike manslaughter trial? Fike was found guilty earlier today. Surprising? Hardly!

Fike’s defense attorney John McKelvy of Tuscumbia admitted his client:

1. Was driving under the influence of alcohol,

2. Had a BAC three times the legal limit,

3. Was trying to outrun law enforcement when he crashed his PT Cruiser into the back of the Ford Taurus that (his victim was in).

Surprisingly to no one, that sounds exactly like manslaughter, no matter what Mr. McKelvy may say. In fact, we’re surprised that Fike wasn’t charged with some form of murder.

*****

The UNA rape arrest? It’s going to a grand jury even though the alleged perp was (again allegedly) identified at the scene. Also beaten at the scene, we understand.

Where do our sympathies lie? We assume if anyone did hit Tyre Pickett, and photographs don’t usually lie even in this age of Photoshop, they simply mistook him for a punching bag in the dark hall.

Yeah, that’s a good story. That’s third degree assault at most, and we understand he will have to go to Florence Municipal Court to officially press charges. We’re sure many would like to see him try.

*****

“Ad Women? Mad Ad Women?” Yes, we have them. Mea Culpa.

However, we do find it amusing that a woman would want to claim that offensive ad. Nevertheless, we’ll be sure to check future blogs to substitute the word “person” if we should inadvertently use the word “man” in that context.

It’s now five days until Thomas Douglas Arthur’s scheduled execution. Will it finally be a fait accompli? Don’t bet the farm. The current main objection to Arthur’s demise is the alleged pain caused by potassium used in the execution IV cocktail.

Does potassium burn the body from the inside out? Since no one comes back from that kind of death, no one can say. Our personal research indicates the drug Versed is a potent tranquilizer and many medical professionals use potassium to commit suicide. Does Arthur deserve more? We personally do not support capital punishment in 99% of the cases, but we also suggest everyone remember that Arthur has killed two individuals and attempted to kill more. His death will not be a loss to society as a whole.

What Are We Going to Do with Uncle (Tommy) Arthur?

$

If you’re not familiar with the old music hall song What Are We Going to Do with Uncle Arthur?, here’s a great video:

What is the best thing to do with convicted killer Thomas Douglas Arthur? Here are our options:

1. Execute him. Remember he’s killed two people, shot a Colbert County deputy who survived, shot a sibling to one of his murder victims, kidnapped an innocent bystander during a robbery while escaped from Colbert County, reportedly brutally beat his two/three wives (the third perhaps being common law), and countless unknown other crimes?

2. Keep him in solitary confinement where he can’t hurt anyone else; this could easily be considered cruel and unusual punishment?

3. Place him in the general prison population where he can hurt or kill prisoners who may have redeeming qualities or may even be innocent of the crime of which they were convicted? Remember, Arthur is one who has used feces as “punishment” for his enemies in the past. Don’t even prisoners deserve more consideration than that? We hope you’re nodding in agreement with that.

So what is the best way to handle Arthur or those like him? Send us your comments and we’ll happily publish them.

*****

*****

Arthur’s family is stating they think this is the end. It very well may be. His daughter says it’s cruel and unusual punishment for Arthur’s family. Let’s remember the state didn’t commit the crimes. The state didn’t demand a stay of execution all these times. Let’s place the blame where it lies; completely in the lap of convicted killer Thomas Douglas Arthur who may at this point have less than four days to live.

Election
http://midnightsunak.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/clinton-vs-trump-1.jpg

We only have a few days left before we vote for a new President. Please gather your facts and vote. If you don’t vote you cannot complain about the candidate. That one vote might be the deciding factor. Who is the best candidate? I don’t know. During this Presidential Election run, especially during the Debates, I am not sure that Scooby Doo would not have been a better candidate to vote for. For better or worse, I believe I am going to vote for Trump. My Grandfather would be turning over in his grave if he knew I was not voting Democrat. Let’s hope that the Candidate that is elected can turn this Country around.

Veterans Day
As you may know, Veterans Day is Friday, November 11th, 2016. Make sure that you thank a Veteran for their Service on this day. Actually, you should be thanking a Veteran every day for the Service. They are the ones that have made this Country safe for you. Some have even given the Ultimate Sacrifice.

Once again, Tommy Arthur's life has been spared. Once again, Arthur will return to a solitary cell on death row where he will have few amenities, almost no food, and certainly no company except for the occasional impersonal visit by a corrections officer. Why does he want to live?

We've stated before that we have very mixed opinions of the death penalty. If anyone ever deserved to die for his crimes, Arthur probably does. Of those who have supported Arthur, let's ask this: How do you feel about the death of Jodey Wayne Waldrop? Did you know that Waldrop was one of six men murdered in the St. Clair prison during a 36 month period?

While Waldrop's killer has been indicted for the crime, three of the other five deaths were investigated, but failed to produce an indictment. While we're changing the legal system, let's see if we can't manage equal justice for all.

Muskrat Villa

From a very savvy reader:

TAXPAYERS' MONEY and ELECTED OFFICIALS WASTEFUL SPENDING:

What a debate in the Tuscumbia mayor and city council race on whether or not Tuscumbia can afford, or need a RV Park (aka Muskrat Villa) at the Spring Park swamp bottom!

I own a business in Tuscumbia and truly hope before Tuscumbia puts us on the hook for such a money pit, they will look at the COUNTY RV park and closely analyze the cost to the taxpayers.

The Colbert County RV Park (the old alloys park) was donated to the County, FREE. Well, almost.......

The County Commissioners approved renovations in the amount of $820,000.00 with $160,000.00 in grants to help with the renovation leaving a debt of $660,000.00 (which includes employee costs and $15,000.00 in attorney fees - that was a hefty charge for reviewing a contract and filing deeds now wasn’t it?).

RECORDS show -  past 5 years -
INCOMEis over $318,000.00
EXPENSES (renovation and yearly operations) total $1,146,000.000 - yes - 1 MILLION, 1 HUNDRED FORTY SIX THOUSAND DOLLARS.   This leaves taxpayers with a large debt for a “free” RV park.

In the best year - 2016
EXPENSESwere $67,000.00
INCOME a little over $46,000 (Economics 101 would call this careless budgeting and malfeasance.)
EXPENSES WERE $21,000.00 MORE than the income!

What county or city programs suffers to pay the ongoing shortfall for this RV Park? —  schools, roads, jail, salaries? Granted, the park in the east end of the county has generated ONE JOB for a caretaker/manager.

There is little hope of ever generating income to cover expenses, or begin to recover the renovation costs and attorney fees of $660,000.00 with yearly losses over $21,000.00 a year.

EACH YEAR this RV Park will go further and further in the RED- creating a greater debt for the taxpayers.

TUSCUMBIA - This is not what we want in our city!

Shouldn’t these hundreds of thousands of dollars be sent to the mayors for infrastructure that would encourage and generate JOBS?
We, the public, are tired of the waste and ready for a change - not a short change.
It’s time to STOP the irresponsible budgeting and wasteful spending on projects that will never grow our economy.

Surely Tuscumbia officials understand finance and budgeting a little better than this county commission. If they can’t see a LOSS of $660,000.00 to date and growing debt of $21,000.00 a year for a RV Park doesn’t pass the smell test, then they all need to be sent home on November 8th!
This ain’t Robin Williams “RV” comedy movie, this is our community’s future!

We need a hero that will step up to challenge the status quo and WORK for JOBS and SERVICES! VOTE for CHANGE that will IMPROVE our ECONOMY, STREETS, BRING  JOBS and LOWER our TAXES!!

WE NEED NEW LEADERSHIP!!!! WE NEED JOBS!!!!!

Democrat Jennifer Gray is seeking a second term as superintendent of Lauderdale County Schools. Republican Jon Hatton is seeking to wrest the office from Gray. Who is better to lead Lauderdale County Schools?

We’ve seen much criticism of Gray in various areas, but have also seen a list of her successes. Hatton is something of an unknown quantity. He is currently the principal of Brooks Elementary in Killen. From all accounts the bow tie wearing educator is well liked and untouched by scandal.

One of the biggest issues seems to be Gray’s lunch money policy: No money, no lunch, and no donations taken. While we disagree with this policy, it shouldn’t be a career ending stance for Gray. Yet as a Democrat, Gray may lose simply due to straight ticket voting.

No one who blogs here has children in the Lauderdale system. We’ve attempted to delve deeper into some issues, but have not been able to ascertain some of the finer points of either candidate’s platform. Therefore, we’re not making a recommendation in this race. Do your homework and vote wisely.

*****

*****

We’re often struck by comments from readers. Why do some think a person indicted for Felony murder can be given the death sentence? Along those lines, we recently saw a Lauderdale voter ask Jon Hatton if he lived in Lauderdale County.

It’s sad that the general public knows so little about our election laws. Yet these are the ones who help determine who will mold our government and our children’s future. We would suggest a short refresher course in civics for all would-be voters, but obviously the Democratic Party would shoot that idea down.

The State Doesn't Know or Track the Cost...

Last week, Alabama attorney general Luther Strange stated, “...the agency doesn’t know or track the state’s cost for fighting (Tommy) Arthur’s numerous legal battles that have prevented his execution.” We’re sure that statement applies to all those on death row.

We’re also sure accounting methods have changed in all state departments with the advent of computerized record keeping, but to say the attorney general’s office doesn’t keep track of how much manpower and other resources are expended on various cases is unbelievable…or maybe not, since it’s Alabama.

*****

Let’s not forget we have a governor who cuts the education budget, then says education in Alabama sucks, then asks private citizens to fix it. We’re certainly all for private citizens taking an active part in local education, but these same citizens are also taxpayers who expect the state to use tax dollars wisely. Then again, see comment on attorney general’s office.

*****

Robert DeShawn Childers remains missing. New rumors crop up every day. We’re sure the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office investigates every lead, but it’s slow going. Most of Mr. Childers’ family live outside the Shoals area, making it even more frustrating for them.

We’ve been sent a great deal of information that must be verified before we can publish it; however, we do plan to blog an update at a later date. We have few doubts that whoever is responsible will be held legally accountable at some point.

We're just like you tonight...waiting.

Aside from a presidential upset, the big (for lack of a better word) story is the possible misconduct of a Leighton poll worker who gave out sample ballots pre-marked for Democratic candidates. Our friend Daniel Rosser has handled the situation very well.

We do worry if this is an isolated instance across the state or not. Somehow we think it's not.

Congratulations in Lauderdale County to Rodney Pettus and Jon Hatton. While we believe those voting a straight Republican ticket obviously boosted their vote count, in Hatton's case we believe Jennifer Gray was the victim of a backlash against her unpopular stances, lavish spending, and a certain list on which her name appeared.

Keller Hospital Part 2
http://media.al.com/news_huntsville_impact/photo/helen-keller-hospital-93e07c4d30b31b01.jpg
You may remember that the Rider recently wrote a story about a friend of mine that was turned over to collections by Keller Hospital even though they had been paying monthly. Well, I guess the article got back to Keller because a representative contacted Shoalanda Speaks wanting to speak to my friend. After getting the email from Shoalanda, I forwarded it to my friend. I spoke to my friend the other day who relayed the following information to me:

“I contacted the lady who had made contact with Shoalanda. She was very nice and listened to my story. She asked several questions to which I answered. She told me that she wasn’t sure why it had been turned over to Collections, but she was going to check into it.
The next day I got a phone call from another lady who worked at Keller, who went over my Bill with me. She was a very nice lady. I explained to her that I did not dispute the Bill; I had a problem with them turning me over to Collections. She asked me if I had called and made payment arrangements with Keller. I told her no, when I got the first Bill, I started paying on it.
She said that may have been the problem. I was supposed to call and make payment arrangements. I told her that I was not aware of that and that I had heard nothing from Keller saying I was supposed to. She was going to mail me a copy of my Bill (which I already have). She said after I get this to call and they would make payment arrangements. I asked why it had been turned over to collections. She said that she didn’t know.
So, is this a simple mistake or usual practice from Keller Hospital? I am not sure at the moment. My friend said they would keep me informed on what happens. Let’s hope that this is just an oversight.

To go along with the above blog, this story was in today’s Times Daily:

FLORENCE — The groundbreaking ceremony for North Alabama Medical Center is at 1 p.m., Wednesday at the hospital site on Veterans Drive.
It is a public ceremony.
The groundbreaking will signal the start of construction for the 555,000-square-foot, $250 million medical facility to replace Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital.
Construction is expected to take about two years with the hospital being opened by the end of 2018. Layton Construction, a Utah-based commercial contractor, was announced last month as the contractor for the project.
The company began moving equipment to the 25-acre work site the middle of October.
Can this area support three hospitals? That is to be seen. Customer Service or lack of Customer Service may dictate the operation or closure of one of them.

Pet Depot

I go into the Pet Depot in Muscle Shoals to get a couple of items for my dog, Ole Jake. Walking in, I see two female employees at the cash register talking. As I searched for what I wanted I wasn’t able to locate it. I walked back to the cash register and overheard the two girls gossiping about someone. I ask where the two items I am looking for would be.
One of them tells me where they are and go back to their conversation. I went to where she said the items were. I was able to locate one but not the other. Looking back at them, I see they are still in the middle of their conversation. Screw it; I’ll go to Wal-Mart. Glad it wasn’t an emergency.

Until next time…
I am and always will be, the Midnight Rider.

The Colbert County Sheriff's Office continues to look for a couple involved in last night's shooting at White Oak near Leighton.

Our advice to anyone in that situation is to solicit an attorney or minister to accompany you to the authorities. You say you're innocent, but by running you aren't acting like it. As it stands now, any LEO could shoot you dead and be held blameless. No one helps his/her case by fleeing.

We're Offering Support Groups

You’ve all read of universities of higher learning offering coloring books and modeling clay to students who feel disappointed in and displaced by the new president-elect. So in that vein, we’re starting emotional support groups for those who are offended by the major disappointments in life. Here’s our tentative list:

* Those who can’t park at Fred’s downtown after 5:00 p.m. due to Flo-Bama patrons will meet on Sunday in the Subway parking lot.

* Those who miss Mickey Haddock, Dave Smith, and Hermon Graham will meet on Monday in a broom closet at Florence city hall where Prince will offer bite therapy.

* Those who feel disenfranchised by both the Democratic and Republican parties will meet on Tuesday in Braly Stadium. Come early to insure a seat.

* Those whose hopes have been repeatedly dashed by Steak ‘n’ Shake will meet on Wednesday at the Krystal.

* Those who have delusions of the Sweetwater Entertainment District ever becoming a reality will meet on Thursday to pick up trash on Minnehaha Street.

* Those who hate Walmart and other chain grocery stores will meet on Friday to exchange recipes using only ingredients that can be found in local Mom & Pop corner markets.

* Those who feel disappointment in elected officials not returning calls or letters will meet on Saturday to visit the homes of these public servants. Bring your own toilet paper.

What are the odds that so many so-called celebrities want to leave our country…and not one of them is a Kardashian?

Veterans Day 2016

The Armistice was officially signed 98 years ago today. Veterans Day as we know it is unique to the United States; other allied countries celebrate Remembrance Day. Our country, or at least parts of it, already had two competing Memorial Days, so November 11th became a day to honor those who no longer served in the military, but were still living.

Yet oddly enough, Veterans Day activities still offer up memorials to those who gave their lives for this country. Perhaps instead of wondering why we have two days of remembrance, we should ask why we have only two?
